The Very Hot Day Nancy Price July 11 2006 Once upon a very hot day, the sun was shining down. Joshy was too hot to play. He fidgeted and frowned. He paced and scratched and was so bored. The freezies were all gone. He looked outside; his Mama Lin was watering the lawn. He hopped right up and to the door and peaked his head ouside. "Mama Lin! Can I run through the sprinkler?!," Joshy cried. "Sure," she said, "but bring a towel. Don't drip on the floor." He ran back in to get one. Once outside, he slammed the door. His Puppy barked inside the house. He said "Can Puppy come?!" "Oh I don't know," his Mama sighed. She answered "Ask your Mum." So back inside he went to find his Mum, where she was reading. "Can I run through the sprinkler?" Joshy asked, prepared for pleading. "Mama said I could," he said, "and Puppy can come too." "Oh can he?" laughed his Mum. "Mm hmm..." "Well then I guess it's true." So back outside ran Joshy, with his Puppy at his heals. He marveled at how good a sprinkler on a hot day feels. He gave himself a running start and hopped over the spray. He bent to get his hair wet, and watched his Puppy play. They shook themselves, like puppies do, to shake themselves dry. Feeling cooler, they laid in the sun and watched the sky. Later on, his Mum said "Lindsay, did you say he could?" Mama Lin said "yes, but wasn't sure if Puppy should." Mum laughed, "ah, I think I see. You told him 'ask your Mum.' I'm sure it's fine, and anyway they both had fun." So Joshy had to dry himself before going inside. It was hard to dry his Puppy off, as hard as he tried. He had to get his own feet clean, and Puppy's muddy paws. And then he had some lemonade with a cherry and two straws. By then the day was not so hot, and Joshy wasn't bored. He thanked his Mum and Mama Lin, whom he just adored. Mama Lin the sensible, and Mum who likes to play. And that was the story of the very hot day.
