Comparing Jack Black to Leonard Cohen - July 15, 2002 - Jack Black was one of the two hosts of the MTV Movie Awards 2002, which I thoroughly enjoyed by the way. He seemed very silly and funny, and made lots of sex jokes. I kinda like his sense of humor. I later realized that I'd seen him before, on "Enemy of the State". In that movie, he had the line "*Please* let me follow the nanny. She doesn't shave her legs. Women like that are so... HOT!" For this reason, I now think of Jack Black as someone who likes hairy women, (regardless of whether he really is or not) and therefore, I now associate him with Leonard Cohen. And here's why: Leonard Cohen once wrote the following poem.
Portrait of a Girl
By Leonard Cohen
She sits behind the wooden shutters
on a very hot day
The room is dark, the photographs gloomy
She is profoundly worried
That her thighs are too big
and her ass fat and ugly
Also she is too hairy
the lucky American girls are not hairy
She sweats too much
There is a mist caught
on the dark hairs above her mouth
I wish I could show her
what such hair and haunches
do for one like me
Unfortunately I don't know who she is
or where she lives
or if indeed she lives at all
There is no information about this person
except in these lines
and let me make it clear
as far as I'm concerned
she had no problem whatsoever.
So that's why I associate Jack Black with Leonard Cohen. =)
Buffy Patriotism - July 15, 2002 - I sometimes think I might be a patriotic Canadian, mainly because I get irritated and defensive when people seem either insulting toward or ignorant about Canada. For example "You live in Canada? Isn't it cold there?" "Um, no, it's summer" or "Canadians are dumb..." well, you get the picture. The funny thing is, I get similarly defensive when people are insulting toward or ignorant about Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I consider it to be overall the most excellently done show on television, mainly because of the creative plots, and the writing/dialogue. The acting is also great, and the effects and sets can also be pretty good sometimes. But people who haven't seen much of it tend to assume it's incredibly cheesy (which it sometimes can be) and that's all there is to it; it's just a low-budget horror/comedy B-Movie style show. Well, for some reason, I sometimes take that opinion as almost a personal attack. I shouldn't take it so personally, but darn it, I love that show, and I wish people would give it a chance. Therefore, I think I might be kind of a Buffy Patriot: a Buffy fan who loves, supports and defends my favorite show.

The Sensuality of Chocolate - June 6, 2002 - Eating chocolate is a very sensual experience. It's so strong, sweet and bitter. It kind of burns my throat. I hold it in my mouth until it gets hot and melty. It glides across my tongue, all thick and creamy. Some kinds have bubbles that melt and pop pop pop across the sensitive parts of my tongue and the roof of my mouth. It's sugary and caffeiney, and it speeds up my heart a bit, so I can feel the blood pounding in my throat. If I hold onto the next piece too long, I have to lick it off my fingers. There's nothing quite like chocolate.
Maybe I have an oral fixation. =) (My favorites are the ones that melt nicely. Aero and Mirage both have bubbles, and Flake is fantastic, it falls apart so easily, and is kind of messy, but it tastes and feels great. Flake is available mainly in England. I've only seen it in a few stores in Alberta. If you can get ahold of some, do so. You won't regret it.)
Abortion - June 1, 2002 -
Some people think it's so obvious - killing is wrong, fetuses are living humans and must be protected at all costs, abortion should be banned. It does make sense on the surface. But if safe abortions by trained doctors are banned, then women will just go back to doing them any way they can find, for example with straitened coat hangers in the privacy of their bathrooms. It's not a matter of protecting the lives of innocent fetuses, because no matter what, some of them are gonna die. It's a matter of protecting the mothers.
There are just too many reasons why abortion exists: pregnancy due to rape, an accident in the midst of poverty, an illness that could cause childbirth to kill the mother, and children can get pregnant (menstruation often starts at age 9). I'm all for protecting unborn children, but not at the risk of harming their mothers. Abortion won't just disappear, and the option to do it safely has to continue to be available. It just has to.
